My Body is a Shrine 2020

This was a 3D linked outcome. I created personal memory based items linking to the theme of ‘distortion’ and a ‘shrine’. My idea and outcome was partly inspired by the artist Bill Viola - interlinking the connection of sound, perspective, thoughts, emotions, memories and mind consciousness. The shell plaster cast and clay bead necklace around my neck represent the healing of memories I have had through a spiritual and therapeutic adoption life story journey and also shrines I have visited in Egypt. These influenced my idea of my body as a shrine. They also represent a connection with water in the womb and the healing power of the sea –you can hear the sound of the waves in the shell. The clay mask, which is an impression of my face and echos the ancient Greek theatrical mask, is being taken off to show the need to be real and genuine in life. My body is a shrine to these ideals and values as well as my own healing journey.

This was the second stage of my project inspired by the photographs of moving images of people who looked like they are drowning by Bill Viola. I wanted the images to be fluent in appearance but also give the message that life is made up of many different components. This is a representation of me drowning in water but ironically there is still life in me - all coming through a spiritual representation that life is always in motion. These photographs also represent my embodiment of the idea that death is part of life.
